Free Resource: A Spending Tracker That Doesn’t Suck

If you’ve ever tried to track your calories or macros, you know how painful the process is of using a calorie counter app. And honestly, that’s also what most spending trackers feel like. You sit down to log a ₹249 latte, and before you know it, you’re buried under drop-downs, subscription nags, and a UI that thinks you’re filing taxes. By the time you’re done, the coffee, and your motivation to stay ahead of your expenses have both gone cold.

This is why most of us give up on budgeting before the habit even forms. And the truth is that most tracking tools aren’t designed for real people with real lives: they need too much input, or they need you to be a spreadsheet enthusiast who knows the VLOOKUP formula by heart.

But here’s the thing: if you’re someone who’s just started earning, or you’ve recently switched jobs, or you’re simply wondering where your salary is vanishing every month (spoiler: it’s not just Swiggy), some form of tracking is essential.

Not to control your spending, but to simply see it. To audit, not accuse.

Enter: the Pennmoney Spending Tracker

I designed this tracker for me, so you can be sure that it’s designed for people who hate tracking. One number and a category – ₹899 on food delivery—and that’s it. You can, of course, add notes if you want to, but it’s not mandatory.

The date auto-fills. The week, the month, the day of the week? Done. Charts update on their own and feed into weekly, monthly and annual overviews. No complicated new app – just google sheets (which you can access online and on your phone). It’s just really easy to use.

This tracker won’t wag fingers or make you feel stupid for spending. Instead, it’s designed to reveal patterns. Maybe your weekend coffees are adding up. Perhaps you spend more on groceries during PMS week (same). Maybe there’s a travel fund waiting to be freed, hidden under impulse purchases you didn’t even clock.

The goal here is simple: observe, don’t obsess. Spend 15 seconds logging right after you swipe or make a payment. Spend the rest of your day doing literally anything else. You don’t need to be a finance bro with a custom Excel macro. All you need a soft place to land your expenses. One that shows you the full picture without making you feel like a failure for enjoying your life. And – one that’s free!

I have always believed that money gives you happiness only when it leaves you. But spending should feel intentional, and a tracker should feel like a helpful friend, not a micro-managing boss.

So if you’re ready to track your money without losing your mind, make a copy of the tracker today (and maybe tell a friend!) and let the numbers gently nudge you toward clarity, not guilt.

    Very useful, Thanks.
I already bought your book and found it to be very informative.
How do I change the category name?

Thank you! Just click on the drop down with the categories, you’ll see a small pencil icon on the right hand side of the drop down. You can edit names there. It’s easier to do this on google sheets (vs excel).
